1797. 9 stars left, 7 right, large letters. B-1, BB-73, Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC. Mint luster visible in the protected areas of the design. The strike is average for this issue, but the amazing quality will long endure. Rarely are the early Bust Dollars found this well preserved with minimal signs of circulation. The surfaces are pleasing, with no adustment marks present or other detractions. The toning is a mix of mottled gold and tawny gray. Most of the breast feathers are present on the eagle, a feature few coins of the small eagle design can offer. Later die state with sharp evidence of die clashing and minor cracks as often seen on this die pairing. Only 7,776 struck. Pop 7; 3 finer, 1 in 61, 1 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 6863) Estimate Value $40,000 - UP

Lot 1101
1797. 9 stars left, 7 right, large letters. B-1, BB-73, Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-55. The strike is sharp for this important type issue, with more tthan half of the eagle's breast feathers showing clearly. Liberty's hair curls show strong separation as well. Nice even toning. The surfaces are clean and attractive, with the only minor distraction being faint adjutment marks crossing areas on the reverse. These are as made at the Mint, and were employed to slightly reduce the weight of the planchet to be within the narrow tolerance allowed for a silver dollar. Only 7,776 struck. Pop 5; 8 finer at NGC for the variety. Estimate Value $15,000 - 17,000

Lot 1103
1798. Small eagle, 15 stars on obverse. B-2, BB-81, Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck with nice even antique gray toning. This is the only 1798 silver which shows 15 stars, all others show the standard 13 stars. Ironically, with Tennessee joining the Union as the 16th state in June of 1796, that likely confirms this die was engraved prior to that date--in early 1796, and it remained on the shelf until this point in 1798 when it had the last digit added to the date, and pressed into service. Furthermore, the reverse employs the Small Eagle design, which must have been to use this valuable finished die. Rarely are these found so well preserved and attractive. A scarce variety and major type coin that is needed by many collectors. Pop 2; 2 finer for the variety, 1 in 60, 1 in 63. Estimate Value $19,000 - UP

1798. Large eagle, 10 arrows. B-13, BB-108, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-53. Light grey toning on both sides. The strike is a bit shallow on the obverse central curls, sharper on the reverse. The surfaces are nice and smooth with minimal signs of handling. Scarce and always in demand when found this well preserved. Pop 1; 4 finer, 2 in 55, 1 in 61, 1 in 63. 1798. Large eagle, close date. B-11, BB-111, Rarity 3. PCGS graded VF-35. Lightly toned. The obverse die crack has formed at the lower portion of the final star up towards Liberty's chin and through her hair curls above her ear. This variety is always a collectors favorite for the dramatic die crack. Nice smooth surfaces and attractive overall (PCGS # 6873) Estimate Value $2,800 - 3,000

1799. B-12, BB-160, Rarity 3. PCGS graded MS-62. Nicely toned on both sides with classic delicate antique gray intermixed with deeper gray accents. The strike is fairly sharp, with Liberty showing separation on all of her curls, and the eagle's feathers are well defined on all but their lower tips on the outstretched wings. The Motto is sharp on the reverse ribbon and the eagle shows some of his breast feathers. Excellent surfaces for the grade, with ample luster peeking out from beneath the toning. A tough type coin to find this nice, and this one remains in the affordable range without getting into the six figure range. Impressive quality for the connoisseur. Pop 1; the finest example graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 40051) Estimate Value $22,000 - 25,000

1840. NGC graded MS-63. Lovely toning on both sides which ranges from aqua blue and teal into the more commonly seen subtle gray and russet. The strike is sharp on all devices. Furthermore, this is the first year of this new style of Gobrecht silver dollar, and although some were saved, nice Choice coins like this are hard to find and in strong demand. Semi reflective surfaces. Only 61,005 struck. Pop 7; 2 finer, 1 in 63 Star, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1844. NGC graded MS-63. Nice even lilac and antique gray toning on both sides. This is a scarce date, with a low mintage and strong collector demand. All (except the few proofs) show four shield stripes caused by a minor doubled die, in addition the top of the 8 is seen in Liberty's lower drapery folds. Heavy die file marks are seen above and below the left wing of the eagle, these features are always present on all circulation strike 1844 silver dollars. An impressive example for the date collector. Only 20,000 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer in 64. Estimate Value $6,500 - 7,000

1855. PCGS graded Proof 64. Lovely toning on both sides. Only 60 struck, with 40 to 60 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. This is one of the nicer examples, with boldly reflective fields, minimal signs of handling, and a handsome pale golden rose hue spanning both sides. The strike is bold throughout, as expected for a proof coin, and the high quality of the preservation really sets this coin apart. This is a low mintage date for both proofs and business strikes, keeping demand high when a nice coin like this appears on the market. Pop 9; 8 finer at PCGS. 1859. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC. PQ. Fully struck with blending shades of iridescent violet and electric blue toning. The surfaces are particularly nice, with no signs of any deep or detracting marks and the strike is precise and sharp on all devices. The toning is elegant and antique. Scarce with a modest mintage coined in the proof format, many of which were mishandled over the years. So when a gem like comes our way we really stand up and take notice! Only 800 struck. 1859-S. PCGS graded MS-62. Fully white with semi reflective fields on both sides. San Francisco and the production of Silver dollars got off to a rough start in 1859. Although there seems have have been an ample supply of silver in that wild Gold Rush city, none had been coined locally into silver dollars. Limited production of dimes, quarters and half dollars had been undertaken in the late 1850s, but no silver dollars. The San Francisco Mint Superintendent Hempstead wrote to Mint Director James Ross Snowden in November if 1858 and requested dies and permission to coin silver dollars. Snowden agreed, and 10 pairs of dies were sent west. These initial San Franscico silver dollars mostly went overseas to China, where they were accepted in trade but most were melted, as the Chinese preferred the Mexican silver coins. None of these 1859-S silver dollars were hoarded and saved when they were released, hence survival is random. Mint State coins are the hardest to find, as most known examples show considerable wear from years of service in commerce. Here is one of the few that did survive with all its mint frost and luster intact. A delight for the date specialist! Only 20,000 struck. Pop 9; 9 finer, 7 in 63, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64+. 1873. PCGS graded MS-65. Boldly struck with light hint of even gold tone over lustrous fields. The surfaces are satin smoth and nearly free of any distracting contact marks. This is the first year of issue of the Trade dollar, created specifically to compete in the Orient with the popular Mexcan silver coins of that era. Despite large numbers being shipped to China these never fully caught on, and after five years of production Trade dollars in 1879 were limited to proof coins struck for stateside collectors. Here is one of the first year's finest, boldly struck and retaining all its mint imparted elegance. Pop 12; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 4 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7031) Estimate Value $7,000 - UP

1875-S/CC. Type 1 Reverse. FS-501. NGC graded MS-61. Nicely toned with deep golden hues on both sides. The strike is sharp and the traces of the underlying CC mintmark are clear with a loupe. It is quite curious that this mintmark blunder even happened, as coins were struck at both the San Francisco and Carson City branch mints in 1875. So how did this happen? Perhaps a Carson City reverse die ended up in San Francisco die shipping box, and somehow the mintmark was updated, another possibility is this occured in Philadelphia where too many "CC" dies were prepared, and one was swapped over to the San Francisco die group, with the addition of an S over the larger CC mintmark. What is clear is that this is one of the most popular and rarest of the overmintmark varieties, especially on such a prominate coin as the Trade dollar. Pop 8; 12 finer at NGC for the variety. Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000
